Damjanovich, Sandor

Biophysicist

He was born in 1936 and obtained a medical degree at the University of Medical Sciences of Debrecen (DOTE) in 1960. Between 1963 and 1967 he studied physics at the Kossuth Lajos University of Debrecen. He began his career in the Institute of Pathophysiology of DOTA and became the director of the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Biology of the University of Debrecen. From 2002, he has been the director of the Molecular Medicine Centre of the University of Debrecen. He has been a visiting professor on many occasions to a number of international research institutes, including the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, the National Institute of Health in the USA and San Francisco University. He is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO). He is a member of the editorial board of a number of international journals, including the European Biophysics Journal. His main fields of research are the structure of cell membranes, the role of the cell surface receptors and ion channels in immunology, trans-membrane signal transduction and the utilisation of laser physics techniques in cell biology. Sándor Damjanovich lives in Debrecen.
