He was born in 1943 in Debrecen. He teaches at the Physics of Complex Systems Department of Eötvös Lóránd University (ELTE) and is the current rector of the Collegium Budapest - Institute for Advanced Study. He became a Doctor of physics in 1988. His field of research is static physics, in particular the super fluid Bose-system, critical phenomena, and most recently, disorderly systems chiefly the theory of spin glasses. In the academic year 1992/93 he organised the school for exceptional students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at ELTE, the Bolyai Collegium, of which he was director until 1998. In 1998 he founded the Physics of Complex Systems Department at ELTE, which he led until 2000. In 1998 - while continuing his university activities - he established the risk analysis research group of Raiffeisen Bank. For a number of years he was a visiting researcher and visiting professor in various leading European research sites (Trieste, Frankfurt, Paris, Manchester). At present, he is investigating the application of static physics methods on financial problems, the theory of rational portfolio selection and the analysis of the internal consistency of international capital regulation.
