Born in Miskolc in 1951, György Gyarmati graduated from the Kossuth Lajos University in Debrecen. He obtained his doctorate in 1980 at the same university. He worked at the Institute of Historical Sciences at the HAS, ELTE and JPTE of Pécs. He has been Candidate of Historical Sciences since 1997. He habilitated at the Pécs University in 2001. He is a member of the Committee of Historical Sciences at the HAS, of the editing committee of the journal 'Századok' and of the panel of the Association of Teachers of History. His main research area is the political and social history of Hungary in the second half of the 20th century. At present, he is Director-General of the Historical Archives of the State Security Services.
