László Békesi was born in Győr in 1942. He graduated from the Karl Marx University of Economics in 1969, and earned his doctoral degree at the same university in 1971. Academic candidate from 1979, later appointed to a professorship. As a financial expert between 1960 and 1989 he worked at practically all levels of public administration from local governments to the Budapest municipality and the Ministry of Finance.
Secretary of economic policy issues on the Budapest Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party between 1981 and 1984; Deputy Minister of Finance from 1985 to 1989; from 1989 to 1990 and 1994-95 Minister of Finance. Chairman of the Hungarian Athletics Association and member of the board of the Hungarian Olympic Committee from 1981 to 1989. Between 1990-98 Member of Parliament. Since then guest professor at various universities and financial consultant for numerous Hungarian and international research institutes and companies. In 2002 he was decorated with the Commander's Cross with Star.
