According to accounts, St Anthony Abbot was born in Heracleopolis Magna in Egypt in 251 AD, a founding monk of the hermit movement who helped others get their spiritual lives on track in the desert. It is said that he cured cubs of blindness and that a pair of lions and other animals helped him bury one of his disciples. This is why he is known as the patron saint of animals and gravediggers.
