A view of Lupeni coal mine in Lupeni city some 350km west of Bucharest, 20 February 2007. The Valea Jiului region counts only 150,000 inhabitants in 2007 compared to 300,000 in 1990, following a programme regarding the closing of unprofitable mines, launched in 1997 with the World Bank. The number of workers employed in mines in the region dropped in the past 17 years from 46,000 to 11,800. State support should be reduced in the following years to stop in 2011, according to an agreement taken before the country joined the European Union. A decision regarding the closing or not of coal mines will be taken by the government before May 2007.
