Ferenc Vonderviszt obtained his degree in Physics in 1982 at the Eötvös Lóránd University. He began his career in the Institute of Enzymology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He spent altogether 6 years as a visiting researcher in Japan, where he was involved in the research into the structure and operation of bacterial flagella. He has worked at the University of Veszprém since 1992. Upon returning from Japan, he established the Bio-Nanosystems Laboratory, thus creating the grounds for domestic protein-based nanotechnology research. Currently, he is the head of department and university professor of the Nanotechnology Department of the Technical Informatics Faculty. He obtained a candidate's degree in 1989 and became the Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2001. For his results obtained in the field of bacterial flagella research, he was awarded the Youth Award of the Academy in 1992. In 1997, he obtained a Széchenyi Scholarship for Professors. In 1999, the Academic Committee of Veszprém awarded him the title, 'Researcher of the Year'.
