Roger Federer avoided a major scare at the Shanghai Masters to beat Daniil Medvedev 2-1 (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). Federer was handed an opening-round bye so had to wait until this afternoon to get his Asian Tour underway. And there were certainly signs of rust as the world No 2 was taken the distance in his first ATP event since his early US Open exit. The Swiss star took the first set with a solid service performance but Medvedev, facing Federer for the first time in his career, hunted an upset and struck back in the second set. But Federer regained his composue late on to break in the ninth game of the final set before serving for the match.

A profi férfi teniszezők tornáit szervező ATP szerdán bejelentette, hogy jövőre minden viadalukon alkalmazzák majd azt a rendszert, amely méri a szervák előtt rendelkezésre álló időt.

Az ATP indoklása szerint az időmérést (Shot Clock) azért rendszeresítik, hogy felgyorsítsák a mérkőzéseket. A szerváló játékosnak 25 másodperc áll rendelkezésére két labdamenet között, ám korábban csak a székbíró ellenőrizte, hogy az időkereten belül indította-e a szervát az adogató játékos.

Az új rendszert - amely visszaszámol - először a 2017-es milánói U21-es ATP-világbajnokságon alkalmazták, de használták a legutóbbi két Grand Slam-tornán, a 2018-as US Openen, valamint az idei Australian Openen.
