Péter Horn, animal geneticist and a member of HAS, gives an overview of the various connections linking Hungarian agriculture to Western Europe throughout history. Horn highlights the main features of successful agricultural policies during peaceful periods of Hungarian history; when agriculture reached high levels according to international standards. Historical evidence proves that Hungarian agriculture has always reached high standards when border conditions were stable, irrespective of the prevailing political-social system. Striking examples are the periods 1862-1910 (Austro-Hungarian Monarchy) and 1962-1990. Horn points out that joining the EU should stabilize border conditions, and forecasts that Hungary will soon begin modernizing its agribusiness.
