Meteorologist Károly Vissy addresses the theory and history of weather forecasting. Weather is an integral part of the environment that influences our everyday life. Humankind has desired to predict the weather for a thousand years. However, weather forecasting has only become a true science in the past 150 years. Vissy's lecture presents the milestones of this development, focusing on the improvements of measurement techniques, telecommunication, aviation, remote sensing, Space research and computer technology. Through this historical review some basic atmospheric processes are explained. This lecture helps its audience to better understand both weather events and forecasts.
