László Györfi graduated from the mathematics-physics department of Eötvös Lóránd University (ELTE) in 1970. He obtained his doctorate from ELTE in 1974. In 1978 he received a candidate's degree, in 1988 he became doctor of science in mathematics. In 1995 he became a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) and a full member in 2001 in the Department of Technical Sciences.
From 1970-75 he worked at the Telecommunications Research Institute and from 1975 to 1990 at the Information and Electronics Research Group of the MTA. Since 1990 he has been a university professor at the Computer Sciences and Information Theory Department of the Technical University of Budapest (BME). He heads the IT and Electronic Research group of the MTA.
He played an important role in developing the curriculum for the IT and applied mathematics departments of the BME as well as in founding and initiating the courses. He developed and introduced the subjects of mass service, information theory, code theory and mathematical statistics. He was the supervisor of numerous university students of whom three have themselves gone on to become internationally recognized university professors.
