He was born in Nagykanizsa in 1954. His secondary education was in Nagykanizsa, while he went to university to JATE in Szeged where he obtained his Physics degree in 1978. He spent several years as visiting researcher and visiting professor. With his Doctor's thesis on the development of terawatt lasers, he obtained his Doctorate of Physical Sciences. A year later he was appointed to the Optical and Quantum-electronic Department of JATE as university professor. He was selected as a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His research work is focused on the development of lasers, ultra-fast spectroscopy and the study of the use of optical methods in industry and medicine. In later years his attention gradually turned to the practical use of scientific results. This is revealed in, amongst other achievements, the highly sensitive gas analysers for industrial and environmental measuring he and his colleagues have developed Teaching has always been an important part of his activities. He has been giving lectures and PhD courses for twenty years, first at JATE, then at its legal successor, the University of Szeged. For his work, he received the Schmied Rezső award from the ELFT, the Award in Physics from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and he obtained the Gábor Dénes award in 2004.
