Burial plots are seen at the Hong Kong Christian Churches Union Pok Fu Lam Cemetery in Hong Kong on September 5, 2009. In recent years overcrowding in Hong Kong cemeteries has caused the government to devise a burial system whereby plots are leased for a period of ten years, after which time the remains are exhumed and cremated, or reburied in a smaller grave. Adopted in the 1960s, the scheme encourages cremation by providing and subsidizing the necessary infrastructure and services, leading many to overcome traditional Chinese cultural beliefs and preferences in which it is thought that an underground burial allows the spirit of the deceased to live forever in another world.
