He was born in 1931 in Mohács. He received a degree in agro-chemistry from the Ivanovo Agricultural University in 1955, after which he worked as a research fellow at the Soil Science and Agro-chemical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA). In 1970 became deputy secretary-general of HAS, then secretary-general from 1985 to 1993. From 2002 he has been a research professor. He is a member of a number of bodies including, the World Commission of Environment and Development. (Brundtland Commission), the International Council for Science (ICSU), the Environmental Council Committee, the presidential council of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and of the Science for Peace working group of NATO. He has been working on issues of environmental and nature protection since 1971. His field of interest is the establishment of the scientific foundation of environmental protection. He has written and edited ten books and book sections and published more than a hundred scientific bulletins. He did an outstanding job as the chief editor of the first (1993) and second (2002) editions of the Environmental and Nature Protection Lexicon.
